Help with AnyLogic Tutorial: Sopedelay

When creating a simulation model using AnyLogic, it's essential to consider how you want to present your work. In this article, we'll explore how we took our AnyLogic project to the next level by introducing a separate presentation layer.

After deciding on this approach, we leveraged our knowledge gained from the 'AnyLogic in 3 Days' book, which is a practical textbook designed for self-education and university use. This book helped us understand the basics of creating a switch between as-is and to-be scenarios and viewing areas within AnyLogic.

To create a more visually appealing presentation layer, we didn't rely on basic button controls. Instead, we used images of toggle buttons in both on and off states and utilized programming to hide and unhide them. This innovative approach allowed us to add an extra layer of sophistication to our model.

As AnyLogic is built using Java, it offers a range of ways to insert snippets (hooks) of Java code. For instance, we used this feature to create a toggle button that changes its state when clicked. Initially, the off-state image would be visible, but upon clicking, the off-state image becomes invisible, and the on-state image appears. Conversely, when the button is clicked again, the process reverses.

To further enhance our presentation layer, we employed logic similar to the one used in creating a high-level overview of the overall process. This allowed us to hide and unhide essential sub-processes within each scenario, providing a clear visual representation of the as-is and to-be processes.

Next, we created slides containing only the necessary sub-processes for each scenario and saved these as images. We then added motion paths to let orders move over these image sub-processes, giving them a progressive motion feel. To provide an excellent visual interface, we surrounded the high-level process view images with panes containing charts that showcased metrics like backlog, orders processed by value ($), volume, aging buckets, team utilization, cost of operations, and more.

By introducing this presentation layer, we were able to display the impact of an AI engine on our process without overwhelming the viewer with excessive numbers. This visual representation helped to simplify complex information and make it easier for stakeholders to understand the benefits of implementing AI in their workflow.

In conclusion, by incorporating a separate presentation layer into our AnyLogic project, we were able to create a more engaging and informative simulation model that effectively communicated the value of AI integration. By leveraging the features offered by AnyLogic and applying creative programming techniques, we were able to push the boundaries of what's possible within this simulation software.
